Site Description

Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (NNR) is recognised as a wetland with an important place in Britain's natural heritage. The main feature is the Lower Ley, which is the largest natural lake in south-west England. Although it is only separated from the sea by a narrow shingle bar, it is entirely freshwater. The bar itself is of geological interest, and harbours a wealth of colourful flowers in the summer.

Surrounding marshes, reed-beds and woodland add to the variety of habitats. These provide excellent feeding and breeding grounds for a rich and varied wildlife. Much is accessible by public footpath, and is a major attraction for birdwatchers and naturalists.

The Field Studies Council at Slapton Ley Field Centre manages the 214 hectares nature reserve as an "outdoor laboratory" to maintain habitats and conserve wildlife. The Centre established in 1959 is a base for educational courses and research, which integrate with reserve management. More research has probably been carried out at Slapton than on any other NNR in Britain. An important element of this work are investigations into the physical processes occurring outside the reserve that are responsible for changes taking place in the aquatic environment of the two Leys.

Less formal enjoyment of the area is enhanced by leaflets and guided walks. The reserve is leased from The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust which promotes education and conservation through its ownership of Slapton Ley and Paignton Zoo Environmental Park.

Slapton Ley is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and was declared a National Nature Reserve in 1993. Consequently Natural England assists with the upkeep of the reserve and its facilities for the general public. The shingle ridge, including beach and car parks, is sub-leased to the South Hams District Council (SHDC). SHDC also assist with the provision of facilities through implementation of the South Devon AONB (Area of Outstanding Beauty) Management Plan.
